Reading lessons at the HoH
In Germany, children learn to read in first grade. The situation is similar in South Africa - but there is one crucial difference: a recent study, the International Reading Literacy Study, shows that South Africa has some of the lowest reading skills among children. The assessment of fourth grade pupils revealed that 81% of children cannot read with comprehension. Although they can read the words and pronounce them correctly, they often lack understanding of what they have read.
Education as the key to the future
At the House of Hope and Glory, special emphasis is therefore placed on reading lessons. Education is the key to overcoming a lack of prospects, drugs and crime, especially for young people from disadvantaged backgrounds. Reading opens the doors for children to a self-determined future in which they can be independent and successful through their own abilities.
Reading lessons for grades 1 to 7
Reading courses are currently offered for grades 1 to 7. These take place two days a week. Around 30 children regularly take part in these courses, improving their reading skills and text comprehension.
The reading lessons at the House of Hope and Glory give the children the opportunity to strengthen their education and develop new perspectives for their future.
